Animals are my greatest love, and have been since I was a little girl. My mother tells stories of how as I little child, I would stop and talk to each living thing I encountered. Many of my favorite childhood pictures show me cuddled up in the embrace of some furry creature. 

A 2016 article in the Washington Post revealed that "Three-fourths of Americans in their 30s have dogs, while 51 percent have cats, according to a survey released by research firm Mintel. That compares to 50 percent of the overall population with dogs, and 35 percent with cats.".

Unlike our ancestors who kept animals as a means of protection or for hunting, the modern human sees the animal as a companion and an integral part of the family. Particularly during this time of physical distancing (2020), we've become even more reliant on our animal companions to keep us company, and to occupy the void left by our friends and family.

So, it's no wonder that some of us are left adrift when our animal companion passes. Sadly, some people are even embarrassed to talk about this with others and they try to relegate their feelings of grief as something that needs to be pushed down and quickly gotten rid of.
