What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that most people experience quite often. Have you ever been so completely engrossed in a movie or  book, that you haven't heard a word someone said to you? And were you so involved that when the characters experienced strong emotions, you experienced them too? That is a hypnotic state. It is a familiar, easily reachable state where consciousness becomes extremely focused on a particular target, and  other outside stimulus has a negligible effect. If you can identify with the above, then you are a good candidate for hypnosis. And the good news is that means most of us!

We all develop beliefs as we grow up. When we were young, these came mostly from our parents, and caregivers. As we grew older they came from our peers and even from the media (a scary thought!). Gary Craig calls these "The Writing on our Walls". These beliefs allow us to navigate and relate to the outside world. They enable us to identify who we are in relation to  "the Other". However, sometimes in life, when we find we are blocked, or even ill, it is these very beliefs that are at the core of our problems. You see, our beliefs are only our perceptions, and sometimes our perceptions are false.

Our minds are incredibly powerful. In fact, I would venture to say that our minds create our very reality. Have you ever noticed that you can have the very same experience as the person standing next to you, yet your perception of events is completely different? That is the the power of your mind... your perception. We all interpret things differently. Those of us with siblings who grew up in the same household will understand this concept well.

A hypnotherapist is in fact an experienced facilitator who helps the client bypass their own barriers, and helps them move past their limiting beliefs to shift their perceptions and adopt new,
more empowering beliefs. What you believe becomes the truth for you.

Mind over matter. That is what it's all about!
